I WAS FIRST APPROACHED ABOUT KURA WHILST RENEWING MY PILOTS LICENCE BACK AT THE FLIGHT TRAINING ACADEMY I HAD GRADUATED FROM A YEAR EARLIER.
My reaction to the idea of paying a company for more training and the prospect of getting a job was instantly “no way”. My thought process was simple, here I was, a fully trained pilot and graduate of the “best flight training academy” in the UK with meticulous exam results – why on earth would I need more training in areas I had already covered? I couldn’t have been more wrong. Fortunately, whilst I was shrugging off the thought of paying any more money for pilot training, a friend of mine who had been on the same flight training course as me took the leap of faith and joined the BESTPILOT program. Six months would pass with little news from him before we sat down for a drink that, little did I know at the time, was about to turn my life upside-down. In the six months that I had spent scouring the internet for jobs from Tooting to Timbuktu and endlessly sending out CVs to anyone that owned or worked with anything that resembled a wing, he had gone through the BESTPILOT program and got a job with BA Cityflyer. Suffice to say I started paying attention. I got in touch with Kura and joined the program a few months later.
My assessment day at Kura was far from a walk in the park. The 2 years I had spent looking for pilot jobs had all but extinguished the spark I once had for the aviation industry and in its wake left a cold, arrogant, defensive facade that had been created as a result of being angry and disgruntled with the lack of any visible way forward in my chosen career. The Kura team aren’t a shy group of individuals, the feedback from my interview was in depth and necessarily brutal but they saw potential and accepted me on to the course.
The BESTPILOT course I followed over the course of the following months was absolutely incredible. The course certainly isn’t easy. It is fiercely demanding but incredibly rewarding. It pushes you to overachieve in every aspect of being a pilot from improving your technical skills to putting you in the right mindset and attitude to be a fantastic pilot. The standard of training is sky high, the quality of instructors and lecturers is second to none and the outcome is remarkable. I don’t know anyone that has been through the BESTPILOT program that would say they came out the same person they went in. It’s an incredible journey of self-discovery and self-improvement that breaks you down, rebuilds you and then releases you into the industry. It was a real pleasure to be a part of the Kura family and the support they gave me was invaluable. Few organisations will really work with you as long or as hard as it takes to help you achieve your goal, yet that is exactly the level of support I found at Kura and I was absolutely thrilled to be hired by BA Cityflyer 1 month after finishing the BESTPILOT course.
Kura’s tagline is “bridging the gap” and there really isn’t any better way to describe what they do. If you were to compare it to learning a new language, flight schools teach you how to ask for the salt, Kura teaches you how to chat up the waitress.
