Due to various financial and lifestyle considerations, I opted to pursue the modular route towards my lifelong goal of becoming an airline pilot. I began my training in 2009 and completed it in 2013.
Whilst I was very happy with the quality of the flight training for my CPL/IR, my flying school had no established links with any airlines, nor did they offer any employment assistance. Upon completion of the course I felt very much like I was on my own.
Keen to start flying as soon as possible I qualified as a flying instructor and over the course of 2 years built up 1000 hours of flying experience. During that time the big Integrated schools increased their stranglehold on airline placement for non-experienced cadets. Despite countless applications, and constantly being told I was ‘doing all the right things’ by building hours and making contacts in the industry, as a modular trained pilot it was impossible to get a response from the airlines. I had begun to feel rather disillusioned with my career prospects.
I had heard Kura was having success at placing cadets with airlines so I got in touch to find out more. Within hours of contacting them I had received a detailed reply from Isobel answering all my questions honestly and openly, and also a phone call from Philip. This level of personal investment from the team continued throughout the whole BESTPILOT course and beyond. I’ll never forget my first meeting in the Kura office, I walked out feeling – for the first time in a long time – hopeful and positive about my future.
From day one of the BESTPILOT course it was clear that Kura aren’t like other training providers. It was such a relief to finally feel part of organisation that would support me and back me up no matter how long it took to get my first commercial job. No longer did I feel like was facing the challenge alone. Each part of the BESTPILOT course was targeted specifically at bridging the gap between a CPL/IR and what it really means to be First Officer on a modern jet airliner: technical and non-technical skills that just weren’t touched upon during my initial training. What’s more it was a great motivation to see every day just how hard the Kura team were working to develop and grow their network of partner airlines for us, their customers.
The great thing about completing the course is that you are a BESTPILOT for life. Continued support and refresher training is all provided with no extra cost. Isobel will always go above and beyond to help candidates when they have interviews lined up. When my time came and I was offered an interview with AirTanker, the team generously gave up their own time to help with my preparation – I don’t think I could have possibly been more ready.
Even now my Type Rating is complete and I’ve commenced Line-Training, I’m still finding it hard to believe that my first airline job is on the Airbus A330, a wide-body jet, flying long-haul routes all over the world for AirTanker. I wouldn’t be here without the support, expertise and confidence Kura gave me through their BESTPILOT course. If you’re willing to put in the effort and follow the guidance Kura give you, you WILL be successful in the end!
