Josh recently completed his Dash 8 line training with flying colours and is now a fully fledged First Officer for Flybe. But it wasn’t a straightforward path to achieve his dream job.
A modular pilot, Josh trained at several ATOs, one of which went out of business while he was training, but finally gained a ‘frozen’ Airline transport Pilot Licence in 2012. He began to apply for trainee entry pilot roles, but didn’t have any success. In order to stay in the industry, Josh worked as Cabin Crew for British Airways while continuing to pursue a flying job.
It was while working at British Airways that a flight crew member recommended Josh get in touch with Kura. Shortly after that, he was accepted on to the BESTPILOT programme and dived straight into the training.
‘If you are serious’, explains Josh, ‘then BESTPILOT is for you. I had to do another MCC/JOC as it’s a part of the programme, but this one was much better value, much more in depth. We did 24 hours of hand flying on the B737 sim; it was a steep learning curve but it was great preparation for my type rating’.
‘The last two weeks of the programme really set me up to be successful at airline selection. We covered online assessment specifics, how to frame essay questions, practiced answering competency based questions, how long to talk for and how specific to be; everything!’
‘I had constant support and felt backed by the team throughout the whole process. The trainers have a great awareness of what is required and give you very specific advice.’
‘BESTPILOT is 100% worth the money. No-one else offers what this programme does. The jobs are out there, but you have to differentiate yourself from the competition and get on with it.’
‘Now, I’m flying for a living and couldn’t be prouder. You think to yourself, I’ve actually made it. I’m here. I still get goosebumps’
