I’d always been interested in flying; the sense of freedom and the challenge made it seem like an amazing career.
After I graduated from university, I felt that an integrated course would get me from 0 hours to CPL/IR in the fastest time.
Two years after graduating though, I did not have an airline job and had no more funds to pay for a type rating or further training.
I was really keen to do the BESTPILOT course as it seemed like just what I needed and I was lucky enough to receive funding assistance from Kura. I was incredibly pleased to be awarded this financial help as it enabled me to do the course, which I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.
From start to finish, Kura helped me above and beyond anything I had experienced before. When I first arrived to do the pre-entry assessment, I felt immediately that it was like no other training academy and that they genuinely wanted to help.
The course itself was brilliant. The first module, Pilot Fundamentals, got me thinking like a real airline pilot, not just a newly qualified pilot. Then the Airline Jet Foundation Course really tested my technical skills and pushed me to improve – I felt that if I could deal with the worst situations in an aircraft, I could deal with anything.
Finally, the Advanced Employment Preparation module was invaluable and I learned so much about what airlines look for and how to present myself at interview.
After completing BESTPILOT I worked at Kura’s training centre for a short while. That opportunity gave me the chance to learn even more about the industry whilst I prepared for my airline selection.
I can truthfully say that my BESTPILOT experience was the best and most beneficial experience of my life. When I started the course I had been working in a kitchen doing 65 hour weeks while applying for airline jobs and had lost confidence in my ability to get work as pilot. Kura helped me get my confidence back.
Now, having been successful at my airline selection, I am nearing the end of my initial training with Flybe and I love it. My dream is becoming a reality and when I start flying passengers around, the list of things I love about this job will grow and grow.
Having struggled to find a job for nearly two years, to finally able to hold my head up and say, yes, I am a pilot, brings me much pride.
